The mission of Nanka School Project (NSP) is to empower students for lifelong success through quality education in a safe and clean environment.

Prior to NSP’s involvement at Community High School (CHS) Nanka, the learning environment for students was unacceptable, and prospects for improvement of that situation were bleak. Students were sitting in flooded classrooms with no electricity or plumbing, poor sanitation, and a lack of qualified teachers in various subject areas. The situation was dire and needed urgent attention.
In October 2013, NSP was established with the purpose of improving CHS Nanka and providing students with a better future. Before NSP, CHS Nanka was not an approved center for national exams such as WAEC and NECO. Students would transfer out to another school during their final year in order to take those exams. In addition, students’ academic performance was very poor at the time.

Since its founding, NSP has provided the school with a well-equipped library, writing materials for students, electricity in the science laboratories, toilets, increased environmental safety (including fencing of the school property), and more. This work by NSP has facilitated notable improvements in students’ academic performance. In January 2020, students from CHS Nanka were invited to compete in the “2020 Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship Business Innovation Challenge.” CHS Nanka students placed first in their category out of schools from 36 states in the federation. Again, in July 2021, CHS Nanka students won first place among public schools in Anambra State Science Quiz Competition.

We have been amazed at what these students have already been able to accomplish with the help of NSP and believe that they can achieve even more if they are provided with opportunities to build 21
st century technology skills. With greater tools and training in science and computing, we believe that Nanka’s youth can one day develop the innovative solutions needed to address some of Nigeria’s greatest challenges.

To commemorate the eight-year anniversary of NSP and set Nanka students on a path to greater success, we intend to establish an information technology (IT) center at CHS Nanka and have completed a draft project plan including key objectives, budget, and community engagement strategy.

Through this project, we also wish to honor the memory of a young NSP volunteer who died 3 years ago in a motor vehicle accident. This individual was very hard working; passionate about education, science, and service; and was applying for graduate school before the deadly incident.

To make the CHS Nanka IT center a reality, and to ensure that it delivers real value for the community, we need your financial support, as well as donations of equipment, time, and expertise. We need laptop computers as well as IT peripherals, and plan to install solar panels to power the facility. We are also seeking volunteers to support this project, especially willing individuals with experience in IT installation and maintenance; IT education and curriculum; and solar power procurement and maintenance.

As we look ahead to this next phase of NSP’s engagement at CHS Nanka, we also want to thank those who have contributed — in any capacity — to our work over these last eight years. Without your support, the progress we have made would not have been possible.

Please feel free to contact us with any questions about this project.
