The mission of Nanka School Project (NSP) is to empower students for lifelong success through quality education in a safe and clean environment. Prior to NSP’s involvement at Community High School (CHS) Nanka, the learning environment for students was unacceptable, and prospects for improvement of that situation were bleak. Students were sitting in flooded classrooms with no electricity or plumbing, poor sanitation, and a lack of qualified teachers in various subject areas. The situation was dire and needed urgent attention.
To commemorate the eight-year anniversary of NSP and set Nanka students on a path to greater success, we intend to establish an information technology (IT) center at CHS Nanka and have completed a draft project plan including key objectives, budget, and community engagement strategy. Through this project, we also wish to honor the memory of a young NSP volunteer who died 3 years ago in a motor vehicle accident. This individual was very hard working; passionate about education, science, and service; and was applying for graduate school before the deadly incident. To make the CHS Nanka IT center a reality, and to ensure that it delivers real value for the community, we need your financial support, as well as donations of equipment, time, and expertise. We need laptop computers as well as IT peripherals, and plan to install solar panels to power the facility. We are also seeking volunteers to support this project, especially willing individuals with experience in IT installation and maintenance; IT education and curriculum; and solar power procurement and maintenance. As we look ahead to this next phase of NSP’s engagement at CHS Nanka, we also want to thank those who have contributed — in any capacity — to our work over these last eight years. Without your support, the progress we have made would not have been possible. Please feel free to contact us with any questions about this project.
"To build the fence, we had to clear all the bushes that previously offered some form of privacy to students when they needed to go to relieve themselves." Community High School Nanka (CHSN) Nigeria, a coed school of over 400 students, did not have a functioning toilet facility for over 15 years. Imagine a situation where students, both boys and girls, use bushes around the school compound as a toilet. And to make matters worse, there is no water source anywhere in the school for students to wash their hands. Sanitation/hygiene crises were overlooked for years till recently. When Nanka School Project (NSP) started to address security challenges at the school by building a fence around the school premises, the problem with lack of toilet facility came to limelight. To build the fence, we had to clear all the bushes that previously offered some form of privacy to students when they needed to go to relieve themselves. When the students saw that their toilets(bushes) were gone, they cried out to NSP to do something. It broke my heart just to imagine what these students have been going through all these years, especially the female students. NSP immediately embarked on a fundraising campaign to address the sanitation/hygiene crisis. To solve this problem, NSP did an extensive renovation of an old structure and brought it to a functioning state with 4 toilets and 5 hand washing basins. We connected electricity and water to the toilet. Water comes from a portable tank which collects water from rainfall. This year, 2021, NSP successfully solved two major problems at the school, CHSN: security by building a fence and sanitation/hygiene by installing plumbing, toilets, and hand washing basins. There remains more work to be done to ensure an ideal learning and productive environment for the students. With your support, we will continue to embark on initiatives that make a difference in the lives of students, their families, and the community. Many ways to donate:
People from Nigeria and those who keep up with current events understand somewhat the
security challenges in Nigeria. Private homes, businesses, churches, and schools are protected with brick fences and security gates to prevent theft and vandalism. Nanka School Project’s mission is to empower students with quality education in a SAFE and CLEAN environment. Over the years, we have made significant progress in the provision of quality education through establishment of a well-equipped library, payment of teachers' salaries, electricity, and access to clean water. We believe that securing the school premises with fence will ensure safety of students and protection of school properties. Estimate for the fence is approximately $12,000 (~ 5 mil Naira). So far, we have raised $4,500 from the community members as of date. More funding is needed to make sure that the work is fully completed. Your generosity has enabled NSP to make meaningful impact in Nigeria. We hope to count on your continued support. Many ways to donate:
